The Video.

Ted Leo’s new Tom Scharpling directed video for “Bottled In Cork” (which just happens to be my favorite track from Brutalist Bricks) is fucking amazing. Paul F. Tompkins. The lovely Julie Klausner. John Hodgman. How can a music video ever be better than this? Seriously. HOW?!

It’s the late show on a Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio. I’m halfway through my set and I mention Barack Obama. Some scattered boos. Which is normal. Somebody always hates the president, no matter who that president might be. In this case, the president is Obama and I am a fan, so I always ask…

It says that Brian Bell (one of Knoxville’s favorite sons) is “praying” that they do the entire Pinkerton record on tour since the deluxe edition of Pinkerton is in stores on October 5th.

Personally, this would get me back to seeing Weezer in concert. I have been a longtime fan (except for this whole Raditude ordeal…) and I haven’t seen them live since Maladroit, mainly because I’m a nerdy purist and I believe that Pat Wilson needs to stay behind the drums.

But Pinkerton live? This would bring back some great memories for me (no pun intended with this also being the theme and title of Weezer’s new single). The first time I saw Weezer was on the Pinkerton tour in 1997 at Ziggy’s in Winston Salem, NC. After the show we hung out with the band and I had a very rock dork discussion with Rivers about various distortion pedals while the rest of my group chatted up Matt Sharp. Of all the Weezer shows under my belt, this was the show that stands out. The Mykel and Carli magic was still in the air (I believe they were there as well) and the band was in top form.

A 2010 Pinkerton tour. Sign me up.

“Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury”

It’s still a bit odd to say…. Alex Chilton is gone. He passed away on 3/17. Sure, SXSW and Memphis (along with the other shows in other cities) got their tributes to Alex, but since Alex did spend quite a bit of time in New York City throughout the course of his career, it was only fitting that we have a tribute for him as well.

“Channeling Chilton” was held at City Winery in New York City on Wednesday, July 28th. Tickets were $28 dollars…..and honestly….I would have paid more for the lineup that they had AND all of the ticket sales went directly to help efforts in the Gulf, another area dear to Mr. Chilton.

It was a brilliant show and a heartfelt way for Chilton’s fans and fellow musicians and friends to say goodbye to Alex.

I got to the venue a little early and I was a little unsure of what the place would be like. Seemed a bit upper class for this type of show. I ran into Craig Finn from The Hold Steady out front and we chatted for a bit. Super guy. We discussed seltzer water (I’m hooked and he recently professed his love for the mighty Seltzer in SPIN) Ardent Studio and Chilton. He was in Memphis a few weeks ago and Jody Stephens gave him a personal tour of Ardent. That’s what I want to see in Memphis…. Sun Studios and Graceland aren’t as important to me.

I found my way inside and sat down at pretty decent seat, stage left. Chris Stamey and Sondre Lerche (a singer I never really gave a damn about… but since he has done so many of these Chilton tributes, he’s earned my respect) kicked off the evening with “Kangaroo” which also featured Laura Chilton, Alex’s wife, on flute. After that, Yo La Tengo took the stage with a brilliant and sparse “Take Care” and then served as the backing band for some of Chilton’s solo works/covers with guests such as Jon Spencer (the only man to pull off a decent “Bangkok”) and Suicide’s Alan Vega (“Rubber Room” and “Dream Baby Dream”).

It was sad to see The Box Tops again since I saw them in Hoboken last year and it was the last time I saw Chilton live. They were in amazing spirits and sounded fantastic, splitting the lead vocals between bassist Bill Cunningham and guitarist (extraordinare) Gary Talley.

Oh and Ronnie Spector popped out of nowhere for your “What The FUCK?!” moment of the night. Sure, she had been announced on the bill, but it just never made sense. Great performance though.

Chris Stamey and the wonderful Terry Manning joined Jon Auer and Jody Stephens for the Big Star set that closed the night. Jon and Jody’s cover of “Blue Moon” made me cry big sonicdork tears. I’ll admit it. I’m a MAN!

According to Ken Stringfellow’s latest tweet, Andy Hummel, the original bassist for Big Star, has passed away. Absolutely horrible, heartbreaking news. I don’t believe he was slated to be part of the City Winery Chilton/Big Star tribute show on the 28th in NYC, but he was present at the Big Star panel at SXSW, just days after Chilton’s passing. Hummel had been sick, but this is still sad news. Jody Stephens is now the only surviving member of the original lineup of Big Star - Chris Bell, Alex Chilton, Andy Hummel and Jody Stephens.

I used to make mixes for every month and pass them out to my friends. They seemed to really enjoy them…. unless they were lying… I also used to do one of those DJSwapShop things where you get a different mix in the mail every month, but that was a mess. Everyone there enjoyed my mixes though….. not to toot the old sonicdork horn.

Hmm. That sounds like a euphemism.

A father knocks on his son’s bedroom door: “Hey Danny, what are you doing in there? Tooting your old sonicdork horn?!?”

I’m not going to give you a track list. That will all become apparent once you import them into your favorite player.

Enjoy. Give feedback.

Get ready for next month’s edition.

Indie Rock Fall!

I’m completely blown away by the quality of shows coming up this fall in the NYC area. Shows I’ve been waiting for for a very long time. I’ve been a fan of the Fannies since 1995, so I don’t quite understand why I have never seen them live. It just doesn’t make sense.

TEENAGE FANCLUB - 9/27 Bowery Ballroom

I’ll be the big nerd in the “T-Shirt From Northern Britain” shirt. The last show I wore that to was Superdrag in Nashville in 2007. John Davis said it was his favorite TF album. I believe I agree.

GUIDED BY VOICES!!!! The CLASSIC lineup. 11/7 - Terminal 5

This one completely blows my mind. I had the feeling that Pollard would do some GBV tour soon, but I thought for sure it would be the Doug Gillard/Nate Farley and company version (and there would be nothing wrong with that). I never thought I’d get to see the CLASSIC lineup of Pollard, Sprout, Mitchell, Fennell and Demos in 2010! Here’s hoping they break out a 4-track and do some recording while they’re together.
