sonicdork - the best albums of 2010 - the top ten

sonicdork. Asshole. Sorry for the delay and “suspense”. Here are the top 10 albums of 2010.

10. Robert Pollard - Moses On A Snail

I’ll admit that it took some time for this one to grow on me, but when it did, I once again reveled in the genius of Uncle Bob. A darker tone for a Pollard record. Eddie Vedder apparently liked it. Doesn’t that mean something?

9. Pernice Brothers - Goodbye, Killer

Joe Pernice could fart into a microphone and still produce some of the best melodies of our generation.

8. Kayne West - My Beautiful Fat Awesome Dark Twisted Good Ass Job Fantasy

My title is better.

7. Dr. Dog - Shame, Shame

Glorious lo-fi pop. Dr. Dog never lets me down. Always a great record without the feeling that they are recording the same record over and over. I have heard that in some circles and you are fucking wrong.

6. Deerhunter - Halycon Digest

Like Joe Pernice up above, the same applies to Bradford Cox. Fucking brilliant songwriter. I have yet to be let down by a Deerhunter album. They grow and grow with every record and consistently churn out insanely catchy records with songs that kill me in that “wish I would have written that” way.

5. Teenage Fanclub - Shadows

Definitely a return to Fanclub formula after “Man Made”. “Baby Lee” could be the best song of 2010.

4. Bruce Springsteen - The Promise

If this was truly a “new” Springsteen record, it would be at the top of the list. Since it consists of songs written and partially recorded in 1978, it feels unfair. If you haven’t picked this up yet, you’re missing out on other Springsteen “greatest hits.” “Save My Love” definitely ranks right up there.

3. Superchunk - Majesty Shredding

Holy shit. I knew this record would be good. But this good? With so much time between records? Yes. Superchunk cranked out a legendary record for 2010. Possibly the best of their career (so far).

2. The New Pornographers - Together

Okay. Simple formula. Carl Newman writes songs. Dan Bejar writes songs. They make the top of my list. I’m that fucking easy.

1. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - The Brutalist Bricks

Released in March, 2010 - this has held the top spot on my list from the very first listen. Sure, there were many strong contenders for the position. Tough competition. But it’s a rare thing to get a record like The Brutalist Bricks where every track could easily be a single (if that’s what they were intended for). A testament to Ted Leo’s songwriting. It’s perfect.
