“Birds” by Neil Young
G.A.G. 1953-2009
This song will always hit me this way now. I’m crying now… actually. This is the song that Emily, Kristen and I cried to while travelling to Poplar Camp, VA to spread my fathers ashes this past week. My father had been battling with alcoholism for the past few years and it finally won the battle on Monday, September 14th. Gary Gore was 55 years old.
He’s the reason I love Neil Young so much. One of my first concerts was Neil Young with Booker T. & The MG’s at Walnut Creek Amphitheater in Raleigh in 1993. It has been so hard to listen to Neil over the past few years because of that connection with my father, but now it feels good again…. makes me feel closer to that old father that I grew up with.
It’s tough separating the good from the bad. Hard to look past all of the pain he put my family through over the past few years and remember that Dad that we loved. It’s one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, but we did it. Now as we sift through all of the horrible information we will learn about him and his estate in the coming weeks, it will be nice to come back to this song and remember the Dad that we loved.
Neil Young - “Birds”
Lover, there will be another one
Who’ll hover over you beneath the sun
Tomorrow see the things that never come
Today
When you see me
Fly away without you
Shadow on the things you know
Feathers fall around you
And show you the way to go
It’s over, it’s over.
Nestled in your wings my little one
This special morning brings another sun
Tomorrow see the things that never come
Today
When you see me
Fly away without you
Shadow on the things you know
Feathers fall around you
And show you the way to go
It’s over, it’s over.
