My 90’s Week - Guided By Voices

Guided By Voices. Terminal 5. 11/7.

I gotta say. I have seen the Doug Gillard line-up of GBV quite a few times. And while I highly respect that line-up and I adored it when I experienced them live, I never truly saw Guided By Voices until this past Sunday.

This was the classic line-up. This was the line-up that fizzled out after years of recording some of the most amazing records together and they never had the opportunity to be the true rock stars that they were meant to be until this reunion tour. They never got to play in front of a 3,000+ (and 2,100 of those were bearded and wearing plaid shirts) audience that was fist pumping and singing along to every song.

This was a homecoming for GBV. No other city has supported the band like New York City, a fact that Pollard mentioned constantly throughout the show. The set was heavy on the classics and I have to say it was amazing to hear some of Tobin Sprout’s songs live. Plus, there is no greater rock star guitarist than Mitch Mitchell.

This is this line-up’s time. I hope they keep it going and even get back together to record a new album. Who knows it if will happen, but if it does, the magic is still there. Still blown away by this show.

And my 90’s week continues on tomorrow night with Man or Astroman? at The Music Hall of Williamsburg. Haven’t seen these guys since 1996, so this will be sonic blast from the past. Looking forward to it.
